BOULDER, CO AND REDWOOD CITY, CA — February 23, 2004 — Spectra Logic, a leading manufacturer of tape libraries, and Decru, Inc., a leader in networked storage security, today announced that Decru DataFort® storage security appliances have been certified by Spectra Logic for interoperability with its tape libraries. The tested solution combines Spectra Logic's trademark performance and scalability with Decru's government-certified, high performance encryption, creating a fully integrated platform for tape security.
Data security is a top concern for IT organizations worldwide, and portable media like backup tapes pose unique security challenges. Tapes are small, easily concealed, and frequently entrusted to third parties for offsite storage. When data is stored in cleartext, curious insiders, contractors or attackers can gain access to sensitive information. Securing data on tape is also a critical concern for organizations facing data privacy regulations like the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA) or the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
“Certification of the DataFort encryption appliance will help customers in industries such as government, finance and health care meet increasing regulatory compliance demands,” said Nick Harper, vice president of business development for Spectra Logic. “Partnering with Decru ensures our customers' data is protected with strong encryption once tapes leave the data center and go offsite.”
“Data security is only as good as its weakest link, and securing data on backup media is often overlooked,” said Kevin Brown, vice president of marketing, Decru. “Our partnership with Spectra Logic offers customers a transparent, fully-tested security solution to protect sensitive or regulated data on tape.”
Enterprises seeking better control and protection over burgeoning data volumes continue to expand their use of tape libraries. The tapes in Spectra® 20K and Spectra 64K libraries hold up to 260 GB of data, which is equal to the amount of information of 50 typical motion pictures. As the amount of data stored on each tape increases, so does the damage if the tape ends up in the wrong hands. By combining Decru DataFort storage security appliances with Spectra Logic tape libraries, enterprises can significantly improve the security of their stored data, without degrading network performance or disrupting existing backup procedures.
The testing was completed using Decru DataFort FC520 and T520 with the Spectra20K and 64K tape libraries. Decru DataFort FC520 provides encryption, access controls and logging for both disk and tape. The DataFort T520 is targeted at Fibre Channel tape backup environments.
Key features of the Decru DataFort platform include:
 |
Strong 256-bit AES encryption provides maximum security for stored data. Decru's hardware-based AES-256 encryption has been certified by the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST). Decru's full encryption implementation, including the Storage Encryption Processor, key management, and clustering, has passed certification testing for FIPS 140-2, level 3 compliance. |
 |
Compartmentalization - Decru DataFort uses Cryptainer vaults to compartment stored data on shared media. A different Cryptainer can be assigned per host, ensuring data privacy across applications or groups within a tape library. |
 |
Transparency and Performance - Decru DataFort can be deployed into existing or new Spectra Logic environments, without installing agent software on servers or hosts. Decru's high-performance appliance supports 2 Gigabit Fibre Channel networks at wire speed and does not degrade backup performance.

Providing security for data at rest in storage is a growing concern for IT organizations worldwide, due to increasing internal and external attacks. According to the FBI/Computer Security Institute, 50-80% of computer attacks originate behind the firewall, and 67% of companies reported internal breaches of their systems in the last 12 months. A broad range of federal and state regulations require corporations to protect the privacy and security of their data; penalties for non-compliance include significant fines, as well as civil and criminal prosecution.
